Portrait of Carmen (2006)
(13’ W x 8’H) Materials: Large-format digital photographic banner. Attached to the exterior facade of the (former) Armory Northwest, 965 N. Fair Oaks Ave, (at Mountain), Pasadena, CA. This banner was commissioned as one of 10 artist/resident collaborations in “Northwest Portraits,” a year-long show presented by NewTown focusing on residents of Northwest Pasadena. It was mounted on the façade of the Armory Center Northwest for four weeks. As a resident of Northwest Pasadena myself, I asked my neighbor Carmen if she would consent to being my collaborator. She agreed and told me that her lips were her favorite feature. Since the site was located on a busy street without stop signs or signals, the banner message needed to be immediately accessible to drivers traveling past at 35 mph. |
